i started playing gw when i tore my rotator cuff mostly just to give me something to do while i was off work. now i'm still off work dealing with workmans comp issues. and still i play faithfully because i pretend the pve creatures are my work comp adjuster and that releaves ALOT of stress from the day to day problems i have with them LOL.

I started because my hubby wanted something for us to play together (and his brother had one so we could all play on line)....almost 4 years later, his brother barely touches the game (hasnt been on in over 6 months) and my state of employment has left me a lot of time on my hands.....hubby plays sometimes but our play styles have changed dramatically so we dont play much together (unless I want to die really quickly since he doesnt really believe in good monk builds...or even bringing a monk along to vanquish areas...'its not challenging then' ugh)...
I still play toooo many hours everyweek.

I believe that I am an addict. I start playing early in the morning (I wake up at 5:30am),

check guru,
do a CoF dungeon run,
get some faction restored in JQ,
sell some junk,
find something to give away on guru,
check the dailies for something interesting or needed,
do the something interesting,
vanquish an area,
try to get one win in RA (unsuccessful to date),
end the day with another CoF run.

In between is real life. And, yes, I do have a real life. But it is not as much fun as GW.

The question is Why do YOU play GW?

I got started on GW my senior year in college, and I have now played for three and a half years. I am by no means a hard core player. I play for the enjoyment and the release from real life hassles and general rainy day lull.
I really enjoy the visual landscapes that enthrall you into the area you are currently in. Seeing mountains, houses, and other random buildings/landmarks in the distance really pulls you into the game. I am an architect in real life and I really appreciate the time and effort put forth to create these wonderful places.

The story is told well in a way in which all levels of gamers can enjoy and get caught up in. It is something that makes you want to keep playing to get to the next quest/mission/cut scene just to see what happens next. I still remember when Rurik died I was so shocked that they did this...
*clipped*
...
-the visuals are great
-the game play and story line really keep you involved
-not having to deal with 25 skills at once (8 is plenty for me)
-not having to play for 500 hours to get a max lvl character before you can attempt the harder material the game offers
-getting on and playing for 1 hour and getting accomplished actual tasks

Well that's why I play and enjoy this game.....WHY DO YOU?
for me this all was only the first 2 years of GW and for like 20 hours with every additional chapter, after 47 months however i can say iv seen it all, been there done that and dont really enjoy it anymore like i used to. it's just normal fun to me atm, but even more of a bad habit...

why do I play this game? O.o

Like I said I am by no means a hard core player, I have played many different characters, and own all the games, and have beaten them all NM and HM. I just got my very first set of FoW armor after nearly 4 years, and that, to me was a great accomplishment.

The game play is great. I like that you can either play with people, heroes, or henchmen and do nearly everything you need/want to do. The social atmosphere of a good guild really makes the game worth sticking with. The mechanics of only 8 skills, and a lvl cap of 20 is one of the main reasons I love this game so much. Unlike WoW (I use WoW because that's the one I know of that takes forever) you don't have to play for countless hours to get anything accomplished. The longest zone/quest I’ve completed was Urgoz and that took 2.5 hours during the free event weekend there.

Basically I play for multiple reasons
-the visuals are great
-the game play and story line really keep you involved
-not having to deal with 25 skills at once (8 is plenty for me)
-not having to play for 500 hours to get a max lvl character before you can attempt the harder material the game offers
-getting on and playing for 1 hour and getting accomplished actual tasks

Exactly! I play GW for the same reasons as you and still love it after four years.

I play for the sense of accomplishment I get from doing something hard/noteworthy. At first this was simply beating the games, then it was getting the cooliest armors and weapons, and now it's vanquishes, missions, and dungeons (no farming, I wanna earn that stuff). Of course those beautiful landscapes in most of the game, badass monsters, and the fun of making new builds and playing them doesn't hurt, either.

Because it has no monthly fees!
come to think of it, that's not 100% the reason, i try / played a lot of other free mmo, but GW is the one i kept coming back.

because its not stupid like other games, ie: you level up, you get a set of skills and you are stuck with it for the rest of the game play, once you master that, and you think this is boring, so you create another character with another profession just to find out that you are doing exactly the same thing. For instant, playing a Templar class in Requiem Bloodymare, is exactly the same as playing a Xenoa, the only difference is the character looks different.

I completed all stories/games and expansion with 5 different professions in GW, Elementalist, Necromancer, Ranger, Warrior, and monks. I'd thought that's a lot and I should have know everything about GW, but its not the case, there're still so many things I've not touch in the game even thou I've played for nearly 4 years now.

Answer to OP's question would be BUILD, unlimited build possibilities is what kept me playing GW for this long.

Because I had a lot of fun with it in 2005. And I'm hoping it to be a lot of fun still, now that I started Factions. So far, it can't compare with my original experience. I'm too much of a Prophecies fanboi I guess. Ah, the old days ...

I play GW more than any other game in my collection because I think it is the best balanced team-strategy RPG available. The beautiful graphics, friendliness towards casual players, and the online nature of the game is just the icing on the cake. I like the fact that I can control just one character by teaming up with other players, or 4 by adding heroes; the next big thing for me, would be to control 8 characters.

I'm a mostly PvE player that has completed every elite area in the game (most of them in HM) on my Paragon (so yeah, I guess I did it the easy way) and I sometimes do AB, FA, JQ and RA.

it is a game, games should be played, if the games are good you continue to play until something better comes along.

I've done everything in the game now in HM and NM with my main character, and completed everything in NM with another character. This includes Elite Missions and stuff.

I already have GWAMM for 8 months now, but I still want more titles :P. Now I nearly maxed Luxon, and after that I'll max Kurzick, and in the meantime I run chests, I'm at 4000 chests now. My current goal is to reach 36 titles maxed. When I've done that I'll go for LDoA, and when I've done that I'll complete my HoM (it's already "filled" but by completing it I mean putting all possible Elite armor sets, and possible Heroes/Pets, all possible Weapons, etc in it, but not all possible minipets lol!) but only on my Main character ofcourse :P! When I've done that I'll go back to PvP, used to be a PvP-player untill I touched titles... I hope I'll be able to accomplish all that before GW2 gets released ^^. But I'm also pretty much "done" with PvP, as I already have r3 Gladiator, r3 Champion, r3 Zaishen and r3 Commander. So I can put all those titles in HoM, and for me that's "done", still need to get r8 hero though, I'm stuck on r5 hero for 2 years now. Also would still need to get r3 gamer some day to put that also in HoM, but that's so boring to get :/...

But ye, I used to play for the BEAUTIFUL graphics and landscapes, and the storyline and such, but that's over now...I've already seen it all several times .

But I wouldn't have still been playing this game if it wasn't for some really good friends in made in GW.

I've tried many games, and most of them were basically: "Mash buttons and increase your level for 90% of the time, and actually play and make quests 1%. The remaining 9% of the time, you'll be walking from place to place".

GW is nothing like that, so I choose it.

And I also like the updates. Specially when they remove cheap gimmicks dumb people depend on completely. The cries are delightful, as if they had the right to get things faster exploiting the unintended behavior of certain combinations of skills.
